I'll Be Back...

...on Monday.

I've spent the past week looking forward to punching the new 3.3 pound Premium trials frame right where its balls would be if it had any. Are we not men? Jesus fucking hopped-up Christ. Is doing tailwhips that important now? Does everyone have to be able to do them within six months of learning to pedal? Isn't the fun of riding in the journey, not the destination? If a four-pound frame is too heavy, maybe take up a less-strenuous activity, like hairdressing or Sudoku. This is all going to end badly. I can feel it.

I think that the benchmark of lightness should be that an early 1980s Hutch Pro Racer frame was 3 lbs, 10 oz, and it's matching fork was 1 lb 10 oz (going by memory here). Passing these milestones is soooooooooo scary.
Bad for riders (injuries), good for doctors and repeat business for bike companies.

This whole time I thought he was singing "I'm tired of old stuff."

I should have just kept my old Mongoose scooter.

In one to two years from now, I would fit in perfect at the park.

3.3 pounds? Hot shit. A frame I might actually be able to break...

I hope you're not insinuating that Sudoku is anything but an awesome "While I'm waiting for my food to cook" activity there, Russ...

I got to see SLF last fall and it was everything I hoped it would be.

Thanks Russ

if your a 115Lbs 13 year old, you will not break a 3.3 lbs frame. Why can't anyone see that!? That's why they are making these frames so light, not for us mid 20's jaded old school bmx'ers that had to learn on 40lbs bikes. Kids today need to learn tricks fast or they loose interest in bmx faster then you can switch on a PS3. I would have given my left nut for a super light freestyle frame when i was 13. Trying to bunny hop a 40lbs bike when your 13 and weak cause all you eat are pizza pops and coca cola is hard, and i lost count on all the times i misjudged a hop and went over the bars to my face/teeth. Not as much fun as Soul Caliber 4, that's for sure.

Mid 20s? I thought everybody here was in their mid 30s.....goes to vintagebmx.com and os-bmx.com

Ahhh....sweet! Got my SPRFLS fix again. Thanks Russ. Keep it coming....

dayday- 30's? Big 41 this year and (still)riding the little bikes with my boys. Life doesn't get any better!

i just finished building up a new frame with a taller standover. I'm so stoked right now.

i think learning to bunny hop on a 40 lbs bike is a way of entering a small portion of manhood.
i'm glad i learned it that way instead of this light ass stuff.

Welcome back Russ, you were missed.

Building on Brian's post, now that Fit has discontinued the "Van," what other frames are out there right now that have a high standover height and a longer rear end? I'm looking into a new frame. Considering an FBM Exodus of maybe a Stricker?

A 13 year old can't break a 3.3lb frame? It woulda been news to me if it was 4.4lb, but 3.3lb..? Remember also these kids want to learn whips ASAP.

Mid/late 20's here.

+1 for more Albert St or Lou B.

stricker has been lowered now

your best bet is dirt bike, rebel contender or lurch
everything else is lower than a stab in the back while you are sleeping

the FBM maneater is still a legit sized bicycle too.

And the Bloodwolf, I think. The United 40 also appears to be tall. The Edwin used to be.

And if the Premium was made specifically for 13-year-olds, that's news to me.

I didn't even think of the Rebel Contender. Good-lookin' out.

making bikes specifically to make tricks easier for the entry lever is pretty lame (if that's why companies are doing it). it reminds me of every time i see an adjustable basketball hoop in a driveway. i learned on a regulation height net...couldn't make a shot when i was young but gradually got a little better as i got older/taller and felt a sense of acomplishment. this instant gratification generation are such pussies.

The Kachinsky, Nocturnal, and Lost Dutchman are normal-shaped, too. All 13.75" rears, though. If you ride really fast and you're not Hamilton, that can suck.

Staats and Supercross make good longer-CS chromoly frames, if you don't mind running a couple race parts (euro BB, V brakes). I ride a Staats on my non-tech gap-bombing and dirt days. Very stable, no problems.

(Usually I ride a Tierra. And I know how stupid I look on it.)

Dosnt the Hawk have a regular stand over height and chain stay length?

Im only 15 but all this low standover height nonsense is getting outta hand. Metal is BMX's last hope to regain its former awesomeness. My next frame is a Bloodwolf. Good to see you back Russ, this is my favorite BMX website.

how are we measuring standover height? seattube length center to center?

These kids won't break these things doing any of their tricks. How the heck you gonna snap the frame bunnyhopping? That's all it is nowadays. When we were kids, we rode vert, dirt, street, and flat. These kids today think vert is a 4 ft. mini and flat is a hang-5. But whatever.

You should just post this on the front page somewhere:

hawk and lost dutchman are not tall, ive had both and im 6'2 and found them far too low

Anonymous said...

Thanks for all the help guys. The Exodus, Lurch, and Dirt Bike come in a 21.25" and I think I might try something really stretched out. Not sure about the Metals?

Anonymous said...

the Metal Rebel Contender comes in 21.125", Bloodwolf 20.5" and 21".

so stoked on normal looking frames, but i'm not that tall so I'd like to avoid the old days when a 20"tt frame had a 14" back end.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Brian -
The Metal Rebel Contender is looking more and more like a contender. Believe it or not, I'm not tall at all. I'm actually only about 5'7" but my priorities in riding have become more about bombing hills at as insane speeds as possible and less about tricks; figured I'd try something stretched out and see how it feels. Thanks for the help.

I just realized that if I got the Metal Rebel Contender I would have to give up my seat clamp! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Am I really old because I actually may chose to NOT get a particular frame because it has a built in? I've had my hose clamp for longer than I've had my own child. I don't know if we can part ways.

Anonymous said...

as much as i love clamps, i think it's a bit silly to skip on a frame that has great geometry because it has an integrated clamp.

do you really need anything more than a 21"? you could pick up a 21" hoffman bama for 100$ from sidewall distro's sale. no integrated clamp, taller standover and it's seth kimbrough's frame.

Black bike is "normal" and awesome, I have one. The rebel contender is pretty much a waffer version of it, with more lightening bolts

Anonymous said...

theres a black bike in my local scene thats been left in the woods, and gets appropriated whenever someone snaps their frame and needs a replacement. when theyve got their new frame they just throw it in the bush by the trails for the next person to use.

stuff of myth and legends for sure

dbz. you should kill yourself and post take a picture to put on the front page.

dragon ball z ftw!

"Are we not men?"

We are DEVO.

This frame is proof

Anonymous said...

let's hear it for de-evolution!

It's fine time for hoffman to re-release the condor. The worst angles, etc WHEN photographed, but gee, it seemed to fair well at heights well over 10 feet...

Or better yet, how about going ahead and releasing (officially) the Miron Frame w/the handy bottle open (which, ironically enough, was just behind the seat post.....)

With this frame, it seems that bike companies are "in the front row, HAMMERED drunk..." No reason the kiddies can't get there with a little help from a TRULY functional frame.

Interbike should be curious, at best this year. Bring on the GT Zoot-Scoot.

josh get a credence. big standover 21 tt 14.5 rear. they are sick

tim said...

jason, have you never figured it out with the pedals? some one get this man a beer....

although i would kill someone i think for a mirron frame, even just to hang on the wall

Hoffman actually still makes the Condor, which is equally awesome and frightening.
