Friday Quiz

With sincerest apologies to bikesnobnyc, who's better at this than anybody, I'd like to end this week with a quick one-question quiz.

Clicking on the photo will reveal the answer, but don't cheat.

Which bike company is proudly showing the exact weight of their latest super-litewait prototype frame by balancing it on a scale?

a) Eastern

b) Fit

c) FBM

d) Fly

e) Thick

And one open-ended question to sleep on. If every company is going to try and make frames that are more or less the same (low toptube, sub-5), why do we need so damn many companies in the first place?

I thought it would have been Eastern, but now I'm just depressed.

man, fbm has really fallen off. i thought they were different. but i guess its kind of like the skinheads at my middle school. you become what you were always against. in the skinheads' cases, they all began to think they were hood and black. and in fbm's case? they feel the need to replicate a chase dehart frame. its a sad day for bmx.

FBM is still cool man don't be so harsh. It's just fun to contrast and compare what companies need to do to stay in business now because that is what the current BMX kid wants. You can't sell shit people don't want. This site is the best ever.

I don't see how Fbm is trying to replicate the chase frame, i mean the howlers been out since the fall, and all their doing is up grading the tubing.
how has Fbm become what they hate either, there motto has always been having fun, and there still pushing that now with things such as the Gypsy caravan thing, or rays jams, brawlin at the belmar.
Just not raising hell everyweek, you cant stay in your twentys forever.
was the AOD that much different from other frames at then time, meanign over built, huge dropouts, not really.
why would you want to buy a frame from some company that just ordered a bunch of frames from overseas, not a company that puts there heart and soul to every frame it makes.

Good thoughts.

I'd also like to hear your thoughts on the overflow of completes. BlackEye and Verde come to mind: More complete bike companies in a market where you'd think there are already too many. I'm not saying they aren't nice bikes, but they're rather late to be trying to get in that particular market when there are companies such as 2Hip, DK, Eastern, Fit, Hoffman and WTP who are established and reputable.

Just starting a clone parts company seems bad enough, I'd think doing that with completes would be harder to pull off image-wise.

Just random two-cents. I didn't mean to post so much. Haha.

hey Steve, bring back the Night Train!

I had the fbm in the pic back in the day but way before I had that I rode original dirt bikes which are basically this new frame so its basically just a cycle. Axle problems were the main reason frames got so overbuilt and those are a thing of the past. It would be nice to see a little bit of a variety though.

the AOD is delayed because they're having problems making the correct top tube. yell at johnny corts!

totally agree with Rich on this...FBM is not selling out by offering a frame under 5 lbs. That's the sweet spot in today's game - better offer a frame under 5 lbs or risk extinction.

I don't think it's selling out. I do think it's silly that it's almost impossible to find a frame that isn't 74.5/75, sub-five, 13.75" rear. I don't want a 21" flatland bike. I'm not Nate Hanson.

I'd rather ride a solid six-pound frame than a four-pound one that dents if you punch it. Can't imagine I'm the only one that feels that way.

Russ,

You're not. I wrote this last Thursday:

Great minds or something.

What type of pussy needs a sub 5 pound frame?

Russ keep ripping on these fools "doing what they've go to do to stay in the game" is the gayest thing out, your product should sell itself, not need to conform to a marketplace, that's when plagiarism and copy cat 'design' breed.

Bring back the Angle of Death FBM.. It will save you!

Those sundays are that light and I'm pretty sure they don't dent. I have had the same subrosa frame for almost a year as well and no dents. To each his own but I think the real vid point here is lets get some variety in the frame designs.

How has no compay tried to change frame geometry... tha shit is like the american bottom bracket it stayed the same forever with no chalengers just because people were used to it.

Anonymous said...

geometry has evolved in a relatively short period of time to where it seems to fit humans within small variances pretty comfortably. i would guess when human bodies change there will be a need to make changes, until then, stop asking moronic questions.

yeah man, there has to be thousands of jaded, bitter old men who hate bmx that suck at riding that need a durable frame.

I thought we were all on here because we love BMX? I know I do, and this blog is the closest thing to my opinion on it... we need a message board on here haha.

I'm old, not jaded though. I used to ride a 40 plus pound bike. I'm stoked that I can ride a light weight bike that is still strong. todays bikes are amazing.

bmx is amazing.

Pat joubert?

I may be old and jaded, but I do this BECAUSE I love BMX. Sorry I mainly jump curb cuts and do pickup manuals to nowhere and basic grinds instead of tailwhips and hanger tooths (teeth?). I may suck, but at least I'm enjoying myself.

I'm young, jaded and basically a yuppie. Fuck BMX. Anyone whose been in the game for more than a handful of years realizes how shitty things are getting. Being good I'd rather ride with the rattyest fucking kids around as long as they were chill. The bikes are only half the problem, the kids who ride now are the problem. This is bike riding, let's keep it that fucking simple. I can't wait until BMX's next great depression and at thus rate, well be there in a hurry.
Fuck BMX.

yes, pat joubert. who you?

Bmx won't see another recesion like it did in the early 90's. This shits here to stay, baby!

Russ you totally missed 'April 21, 2008 9:58 AM's' point.

There's no point putting out frames for your demographic as it accounts for a small percentage of bmx sales.

The bikes that are put out for more demanding riders would do you fine anyway.
