Down The Tubes

• So that's what the cross-section of a Wave downtube looks like! Always wondered about that, but not enough to cut a friend's frame in half. In other Sunday news, someone is still running one of the original shaved headtube prototypes. It's still running strong after a year and a half, and it still looks stupid, in my humble opinion. Until someone starts making stainless headset bearings, I'll take the extra couple of grams, Pat.

Um, OK.

• Remember these bars? They were an August Fools joke perpetrated by Mr. Chris Moeller back in 2008. Today I open an e-mail from Cambria Bicycle Outfitters featuring this frame—a 2.75 pound, latticework carbon, hardtail MTB that costs $5,000. And they actually have the gall to say "IF YOUR [sic] LOOKING TO GET ONE YOU HAD BETTER HURRY, ONLY 200 ARE GOING TO BE PRODUCED IN 2009 AND CAMBRIA BIKE IS ONE OF THE FEW LUCKY RETAILERS THAT WILL BE CARRYING THEM" Oh my God, I'd better order one right away, then! Because I wouldn't want them to sell out and have to buy something inferior like this (um, for $1,000 less). I'm sure people are just going to be lining up to buy $5,000 MTB frames in 2009.

I also like that "the Delta 7 Arantix is truly revolutionary and could possibly change the way people ride bikes." Uhhhh, are we going to start pedalling with our hands and steering with our feet? Because otherwise, it's just a frame. An incredibly light, incredibly expensive frame that no one in their right mind would ever buy. Just because you can make something doesn't mean you should. And it certainly doesn't mean you can sell it. Shockingly, Delta 7 does seem to be a real company. Hopefully they start making BMX frames before they inevitably go under.

Well played, JPR. There's a picture of one of those carbon frames with the HT snapped off.

how much for the El Guapo peg?

"Surprisingly, a lot of people didn’t notice the Wave when we initially showed it at Interbike, and to this day some riders STILL haven’t noticed it."

Delusional much? How many people have noted how fucking ugly those frames are? Regardless of function, so many people just don't dig them because they look hideous.

Ahh how I long for the days when "ugliness" was considered a subjective matter... of course with the introduction of the fictionalometer (TM) and the ability to take direct measurements of aesthetic parameters, those days are long gone... RIP.

I enjoy looking at QBPs inventory and watching the Sunday numbers never move.

I truly believe that there is no nicer looking AND more functional frame than a Sunday 2nd Wave in Warm Red.

That skirt on the headtube just helps keeping water (and dirt) in, it doesn't really help much (if any) at all.

Everyone is trying to make everything weigh less, so why not remove material where it doesn't weaken anything AT ALL? It makes perfect sense. Also I think it looks good.

i like its odd that sunday has a the wave tube for more then a year before they had shown a cross section example of there tube.

its kindave like saying hey guys remember we invited this awesome/gross downtube, dont forget how great we are.

FSA make an Impact Pro headset with stainless bearings. Shit, Kink have branded one with ceramic bearings and Ti races...

If anybody really wants El Guapo pegs, I've got a pair at my shop for $29.99

I have to contend the skirtless design look like shite. Sorry George. You may say they keep the shit out but tiny little grits WILL get in nook and crannies no matter what as long as there is moisture, oil, and shit from the environment etc to make particles stick to your bike.

It's just an 'innovation' that looks like shit, just my opinion.

I also contend that nothing beats the conventional 1 1/8" interference fit headset. I've run the integrated for a few years now and I'm still not very impressed with it, it's not maintenance free as it was originally thought and doesn't last very long. I know post weld machining yadda yadda I just want BIGGER, SMOOTHER BALLS damnit!

Attribute “Reliability” causes deterioration of the attribute “Convenience of use”.

Attribute “Stability of object” causes deterioration of the attribute “Harmful side effects”.

I want a waved downtube penis so I can grind it vigorously everyday and be resistant to being flaccid. Is there a place to do this in Thaiwan?

Is this a fact or are you just talking shit out of your arse?"

oh that is not a lie in the slightest bit. i can 10000% vouch for that. i check qbp daily at my shop, and have noticed the sunday numbers not moving too much at all.

but then again, qbp really doesnt have anybody worth a shit there for bmx (except for that todd guy who is pretty cool). every single other person i talk to there doesnt really have any clue on how to sell bmx, or to even answer simple questions. the sales reps know what is on the screen in front of them and that is it. it would be like 53 bmx riders (who know nothing about anything but bmx) trying to be sales reps at a high end road bike company. it kinda makes sense to me why bmx in general at qbp is a joke.

I could not disagree more. In fact I am totally flabbergasted by this comment.

No matter how shitty QBP is at selling BMX stuff, every mailorder has Sunday frames on sale almost constantly. And that's been since they were released. Without Odyssey's money Sunday would be tanking.

No way dude, Toastyovens is a genius, just ask him on Bikeguide.

I see a lot of kids on particular message forums with Sunday bike checks.

Infact, I would like wager that there are more Sunday checks then those from other large bike companies like Fit, Fly, FBM, S&M, etc...

The way I see it, you would never guess they're having any problem getting rid of them.

I don't ride one, but the way I see it they're functional, street ready, decent frames.

To each their own.

Word: Goaroser (isn't that a sex position where someone stands on their head while someone else is holding onto a bar dangling from a ceiling?)

I'd rather see companies enlarging the vent holes and taking off things like the headtube ends that dont do anything than simply making all the main tubes thinner each year..

I would wager Fit/ S&M have 50% of the market for aftermarket frame sales. Bike checks don't mean shit, overall sales do. Talk to any retailer or distro and you will realize Sunday sales are lumped in with most of the other also rans. Are you implying Sunday is a small company? They are owned by Odyssey, the largest parts company in the business. Your opinion is worth nothing.

maybe they're (Sunday frames) just over produced? could just be that they're always overstocked not becasue they don't sell a shitload of them but becasue they're making two shitloads...? it might have less to do with poor sales and more to do with poor managment. maybe.

Man,im so tempted to cop one in blue,if i only could find one in 21" tt,and,to be honest,i miss the S&M LAF from few years back...Moeller,if you have one left,i might get it....

I am in no way implying Sunday is a small company, I was only implying that I see a TON of their products, equal or more so than other large companies.

So, I was just stating that I don't see how they're having problems selling items, but it could just be that everyone on BG loves Sunday, and not so much elsewhere.

I'm not in the industry, and I don't have access to the numbers. I was just making a general assumption based on what I see.

Is the wave design used in anything else besides bike frames? Seems like you'd see this in sewer water pipes or long pieces of electrical conduit or tank guns or something.

EvilOlivE said...

^^^how many other applications of thin steel tubing can you think of that are supposed to be able to handle repetitive beating with steel and concrete?

ToastyOvens said...

"why the fuck would you cut out a cup that holds your headset taught and intact? just for sanctity and fashion sake?"

Those frames use an integrated headset. The section that they cut out is just a 'skirt' and only serves to preserve the sanctity of the true displeasing appearance of the integrated headset while being fashionable.

So it's the other way around actually.

I'd dab some grease over the races so it wont rust and use headset covers if I was ever going to use a skirtless frame.
