Public Service Announcement

Before you buy that fantastic new part that you're sure will make you a better rider, maybe watch this:

• 44/16
• American BB, regular headset
• 48s
• 7+ pound frame

All add up to what may be the best video section ever?

Yeah, you're probably not Van Homan. But it's more about how you ride than what you ride. Just ride your bike.

EDIT: Since it was posted in the comments, I may as well add the old Ride bike check here. Thanks, anonymous. Mean Street!

Nice. I hadn't seen that in a while.

That rail over by Love Park/Philly City Hall deserves to be a national historic marker to Van. You have to see that place in person to appreciate just how insane manualing it really is. As popular as Van is, I'm pretty sure he's underrated.

I kinda wish i bought the Mean Street instead of my Cashius sometimes.

I think the bike shop had the first version with the "VH" Van Halen logo too before the lawsuit. Damn.

All time most ruthless destroyer. Dave young had balls, Josh Heino had balls and creativity, and countless others are worthy of respect. But Van Homan will one day look down from his throne in BMX Valhalla. That video (Square One, right?) was filmed in what, 99-2001? It premiered in '01, like Brien mentioned.

I've never met Van, but a buddy who once rode with him told me that something literally wasn't quite right with the guy...he seemed to lack any sense of self-preservation. He said that even as a fellow bike rider, it was actually scary watching him go so big. Coming from my friend, who himself is amazing and considered by some to be fearless, I can see what he means in almost every video part I've ever seen Van ride in. As Darren mentioned, too: video never really does justice to what the rider is really doing.

Wish Van would go Miron-style and wear a helmet, though.

^Shut up with your helmet shit. Go photoshop helmets in if you want and then join Pinkbike. Seriously enough with wanting people to wear helmets, especially in the past where you can't do anything about it. Van rode how he wanted to and it is and was his choice to wear one. The video is Little Devil's Criminal Mischief, btw, bud.

the one, huge, obvious, major difference between that clip and any current video section (on a "current" bike)is the abillity to whip into and out of almost every trick. whip to grind up a rail to whip out could never happen on a bike like that. just like you can't kick flip before each skate trick on a ten inch wide deck. i completely agree that people don't NEED a twenty pound bike to be a good rider but they do if they want to follow the current trend tricks.

Anon 6:50AM.

While I understand you're more full of internet courage than actual intelligence. Noel (who looks scrawny, but was trained to kill by the US government and spent time riding The Skatepark of Iraq) can back up his pro helmet sentiment with a stack of medical bills. Which is a much more moving argument than oblique homophobia and ridiculous name calling.

Also, since you obviously didn't pay attention in third grade english class, "would" is present tense. Noel is talking about *now*.

PS

UR dum

i remember watching this video in the bike shop at woodward. nate wessel came in with a blank vhs. it had criminal mischief minus the crash section, credits and "secrete section" (unsung zero-small brown bike). there were probably 80+ bmxers in that place. when van's part came on it was a dead silence. never forget that day or that video. wondering if it was one of the first unofficial premieres?

Like Todd said, I believe a lot of the "progression" in riding is due to the lightening of parts. You can certainly throw the bike around MUCH more easily with a 25lb bike than a 40lb bike.

Now, if you consider that progression or not, is a matter of preference. Some people would say a triple whip is better than Van's part here, but others would call that blasphemy. I'd be firmly in the latter camp, but it's all opinion anyways.

you are the mechanic and your bicycle is your tool. good tools help a mechanic work better, yes, but mechanic is still the one getting the job done.
im not sure how many people will actually understand this, but it is so true.
light bikes don't make you a better bike rider. you make yourself a better bike rider.

no, Bobby P...you are the tool.

just kidding, buddy.

Never once called anyone anything other than bud. Don't know where you get the homophobia from and it is neither indirectly stated or expressed. Just because your friend hit his head a few times does not mean that Van should have to wear a brain bucket in the present tense or the past or even the present perfect for that matter. He may, however, have to wear one in the future continuous as it may be passed into law in that police-state you live in.

Your reading comprehension is still poor. Noel stated that he wished that Van would wear a helmet, as far as I know, the only place Noel has ever forced anyone to wear a helmet is at the skatepark he runs.

But "oh noes, you would like someone to ride safely you are evil, and trying to oppress me" yeah, that's a reasonable response. What are you, eight?

^You, sir, are a bumface!

Whipping in and out of every trick just looks retarded after a while. It's just my opinion, of course, but I'd way rather watch a Sean Burns video part than a Daniel Dhers Dew Tour run. Like anything else, tailwhips are great...in moderation.

NY bmx scene should be more like the NYHC scene. The old school guys should be able to shut the new school bitches up. DMS!
